Women Military Veterans
Hear remarks from two subject matter experts on the state of women military veterans in Seminole County, Florida and the challenges women veterans face as each transition from active military duty to civilian life. Speakers are Laurie Reid, a local US Navy veteran now in civilian life as a counselor at Seminole Behavioral Healthcare, and a non-veteran, Venita Garvin Valdez, CEO of a domestic abuse shelter in Key West, Florida. Valdez is helping lead Joining Forces for Women, a project of the national Business and Professional Women’s Foundation. The event is hosted by the League of Women Voters of Seminole County. Managing the Chronicle
Ray Bush is general manager of Knight Newspapers which publishes the Seminole Chronicle, a weekly community newspaper which primarily serves the communities of Oviedo, Winter Springs, Geneva and Chuluota, in southeast Seminole County, Florida. Ray Bush took the reins of the Chronicle 4 months ago and he has made many changes in the Seminole Chronicle. He also oversees the publication of The Central Florida Future. Children That are Hurting
“Children that are hurting” is a phrase the Seminole county public school district’s board chair Dede Schaffner speaks to describe more than 1,700 homeless students served by the district. Joined by Brenda Carey, chairman of the board of Seminole county government, and Dr. Joel Hunter, senior pastor of Northland – A Church Distributed, they have formed a collaboration of faith-based organizations in the county to work side-by-side with the district to confront student homelessness, decrease it and, perhaps, if successful, apply that strategy in the future to address other categories of homeless people in Seminole county. Seminole County Public Schools face a serious budget shortfall. Originally set at $20 million, new revenue declines announced by the state put the amount at $40 million. John Pavelchak, executive director of finance and budget explains the fiscal situation.
