Senator Simmons serves District 22 which is made up of parts of Seminole and Orange County. He is chair of the budget subcommittee for PreK-12 education appropriations and sits on the subcommittee on higher education appropriations His other committee assignments are Agriculture, Judiciary, Reapportionment and Rules subcommittee on Ethics and Elections. He served in the Florida House from 2000 to 2008 and was elected to the Senate in 2010.
